About

Dermal Fillers

Usage of dermal fillers has experienced substantial growth over the last few years. [1]  More and more, patients request procedures that offer similar results to surgery but don’t require invasive incisions or lengthy recovery time. Today, there are several treatments that provide a more comfortable experience and ideal results. Dermal fillers and other injectable treatments were created in the late 20th century, and continue to do just that. Recent statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) show 3.2 million patients received soft tissue fillers in 2020, a decrease of only 11% compared to the year before. While other treatments experienced more dramatic declines amidst the global pandemic, dermal fillers remained in high demand!

Juvederm

Juvederm is a hyaluronic acid dermal filler. HA is a non-sulfated sugar-based chemical consisting of glucuronic acid and acetylglucosamine disaccharide. [1] These two components are essential for the extracellular matrix, which contains the scaffold of fibers and proteins that provide structural support to the skin. When injected, they strengthen the matrix by allowing for improved hydration and increasing collagen production. Almost immediately, wrinkles begin to fade. Juvederm is a specially formulated injectable with hyaluronic acid that has been modified to produce a durable, effective volumizing agent. [1] During production, the molecular structure of the HA is altered during a process called cross-linking for a long-lasting, smoother gel. [2]

Benefits

Each year, millions of Americans opt for a Juvederm treatment. This dermal filler is beloved for its easy treatment, no downtime, and of course, the results it produces. You can expect these other benefits as well:

A Quick, Non-Surgical Procedure

Patients can get rewarding results without resorting to invasive measures. Patients can receive a Juvederm treatment in under an hour and watch their wrinkles, fine lines, and nasolabial folds fade away.

Can Resume Daily Life Right After Treatment

Patients can resume their life as soon as their session ends. You won’t need to worry about an exhausting recovery process or have to take time off from work. Patients can have a Juvederm injection session on their lunch break, and return to the office immediately after!

Fast, Natural-Looking Results

When Juvederm is injected, the hyaluronic acid gel provides an immediate volumizing effect. And, the Juvederm line of dermal fillers has several specially-formulated varieties that are designed for specific areas of the face. This range of flexibility and firmness ensures that patients can obtain optimal results, whether they’ve chosen to treat lips, nasolabial folds, forehead lines, or add volume to the cheeks. And over time, the hyaluronic acid improves the production of the vital components of the extracellular matrix, the deep layer of the dermis. As a result, patients enjoy natural-looking volume in the treatment area and long-term improvement. Depending on their treatment, results can last approximately 18 months.

Ideal Candidates

Juvederm has helped many men and women patients address age-related cosmetic issues. Despite that, there are different factors to consider if you’re thinking about treatment. Ideal candidates are usually:

  • Age 18 years or older
  • Have healthy skin free of certain underlying conditions, and are not currently experiencing issues such as severe acne or breakouts
  • Want to correct wrinkles and lines with non-surgical methods
  • Want to fill in hollow areas of the face, including the cheeks
  • Not satisfied with the results of their current skincare routine
  • Not allergic to hyaluronic acid
  • Not pregnant or nursing

Preparation

A few items need to be completed before you come in for your appointment.

  • Avoid taking certain medications such as OTC pain medications, anti-inflammatories, blood-thinners, and vitamin E. They may affect blood flow and cause unnecessary bleeding and bruising.
  • Do not apply topical creams containing retinol, glycolic acid, and other anti-aging treatments. Doing so may irritate the skin.
  • Refrain from alcoholic beverages at least 24 hours before treatment.
  • On the day of your treatment, please come to the office with a clean face, without makeup or moisturizer.

Procedure

Before we begin, we will cleanse the skin and apply a topical anesthetic to quell any discomfort. Once these items are complete, Dr. Wells will begin the injection process. Juvederm is administered in strategic injection patterns and depths using a fine needle. Once injected, Juvederm works to smooth, plump, and fill the skin. The process should take place in under an hour. After the procedure, you are free to leave our care and start enjoying the results.

Recovery

Juvederm has only minor after-effects following treatment. You may feel some swelling, bruising, discomfort, and discoloration once your session is over. This should only last for a few days. You can apply an ice pack and take OTC pain medication such as Tylenol to ease any discomfort.

Results

You will be amazed at how fast your results will show. After your session, your initial results will come to light. Heightened results will show once the above symptoms improve and the Juvederm settles into place under the skin. Your results can last between 6-18 months. [2] After which, you can make additional appointments to sustain your results.

Corresponding & Complementary Procedures

Dr. Wells offers an assortment of anti-aging solutions. She may recommend these helpful treatments at your consultation.

Blepharoplasty Under Local Anesthesia

While there’s a lot that Juvederm can accomplish, it’s no match for drooping skin above the eyes. Also known as “Awake” eyelid lift, this version of the procedure makes corrections to age-related sagging of the eyelid but is performed without general anesthesia. Local anesthesia allows for fewer complications, faster recovery, and better outcomes than a traditional eyelid lift. The straightforward procedure makes the appropriate incisions to remove excess fat and skin that affects the upper eyelid. The remaining skin is tightened, and patients enjoy a youthful, more alert expression, as well as an improved field of vision.

PRP Skin Rejuvenation

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Skin Rejuvenation uses the regenerative element in your own blood to produce a healthier, more youthful complexion. Patients have an easy blood draw performed. The blood sample is then sent through a centrifuge to isolate the platelets that will be reintroduced to your body via injection. When applied to the skin after a microneedling session, the platelets are able to penetrate deep into the skin and restore healthy, smooth, youthful skin.
